The birds outside drive Fergus crazy and he chatters furiously at them while his tail twitches madly. A recent observation by animal biologists of small wild cats in jungle environments noticed them chattering at monkeys. The monkeys represent prey so one possible explanation for this chattering is that the cat is mimicking the sound of it's prey in order to get closer to make a kill. Interesting thought.

I read in a book (I can't remember the title) that indoor cats make this chattering noise when they are looking through the house window and see prey close by. They make the chattering noise because they become greatly frustrated by the fact that they see prey so close but yet they know they cannot get through the window to get the critters they see outside. Is this true? I don't know, but some cat biologists believe it. Corinne Gonyier
